1992年の古い小説であるが、当時好きだった村上龍氏の作品なのに私は読んだ記憶がなかった。
私にとって、「ラッフルズホテル」は、映画の印象が強かったのだ。
後書きをみると、やはり最初に映画が出来て、その後に小説になったとのこと。だから、コマーシャルを見て、勝手にわかったような気になっていたのかもしれない。
物語は、天才的な才能があるとされる美しい女優とベトナム戦争の写真を撮っていた経験があるカメラマンの恋愛物語。そして、シンガポールで女優のアテンドをすることになった高級な客しか相手にしない気の利く日本人ガイドも登場する。
ニューヨーク、金沢やシンガポールなどの場所で、しかも3人の登場人物がそれぞれの思いや言葉で語られる方法は少し斬新なスタイルだ。
超セレブしか知らない銘柄のシャンパン名など、村上龍氏らしさ満載で、それは当時の流行だったのかもしれないが、それを差し引いても、多分映画を観ることはないだろうと思わせる作品だった。
