Will UUVs be a game changer? Surprised by the future of the fight! [Impression]

bouei-1.jpg

I have learned that the Defense Acquisition and Development Agency, an external agency of the Ministry of Defense, is currently conducting research and development on the Unmanned Underwater Vehicle, or UUV for short, and have introduced it in this video.
The video also introduces Gondo, an autonomous unmanned underwater vehicle (AUV) that is already in operation on a Japan Coast Guard survey vessel, and explains the differences in roles between Gondo and the UUV currently being researched and developed by the Defense Acquisition and Technology Agency.
Furthermore, from the perspective of the "enhancement of unmanned asset defense capabilities" that the Ministry of Defense and the Self-Defense Forces are trying to promote, the exhibition also explains the greatness of unmanned assets in an easy-to-understand manner, citing research publications on future battle strategies and other materials.
The video is not for public viewing, so it does not use realistic video, but it is a useful reference for those interested in the JMSDF, its vessels, submarines, etc., as they are essential equipment for the JMSDF in the future. Please take a look.

Submarine Narushio Maniacs Discovered [Impression]

DSC04311-0-1.jpg

DSC04323-1.jpg
The JMSDF's Yokosuka Regional Admiralty is very grateful to the JMSDF's Yokosuka Regional Admiralty for holding open-house events for submarines, but in the case of submarines, there is less and less to see because you are just riding on their backs. Moreover, there are currently only three types of submarines in Japan: the Oyashio class, the Soyu class, and the Tai-Gei class, so there are only three different types of submarines in terms of appearance.

So, even though I am in a rut, I still go to see them, but I find something new when I go there. I didn't know they were equipped with direction indicators. I was told that these are necessary when the boat runs on the surface of water such as the Uraga Channel at night.

I am convinced that there are things that can only be discovered by going to the site.

Rainy public viewing of "destroyer Amagiri [Impression]

DSC04319-1.jpg

The open house at the JMSDF Yokosuka General Headquarters, which is held twice a month, was unfortunately rained out. I had never used a camera in the rain, so it was very difficult.

After all, I realized that it was no good to take pictures while holding an umbrella. Because of the wind, even if I put the camera under the umbrella, the rain would get on the lens...

Still, it was nice to be able to board the oldest active escort vessel, the Amagiri. The latest destroyers are designed to be stealthy and spindly. That's great because they use the latest technology, but I still think the old battleship-like type is wonderful to look at.

Education and training for the Tomahawk cruise missile to begin in the JMSDF? [Impression]

SnapShot-1.jpg

When you hear the word "Tomahawk," you may think of the cruise missiles used by the U.S. military in preemptive strikes during the Gulf War, Iraq War, and other wars.

Japan has purchased Tomahawk missiles and will install them on JMSDF's Aegis vessels.

Prior to this, it was reported that the U.S. military will educate and train JMSDF personnel in the use of the Tomahawk.

I did not know much about it, so I did a little research and found out that the situation in Taiwan and other issues were behind it.

I put it all together in a video, so if you are interested, please take a look.

Destroyer Izumo F-35B Fighter Maintenance by JMSDF? or the JASDF? [Impression]

DSC04115-1.jpg

The Yokosuka Regional Admiralty conducts a bimonthly open house of its submarines. Last time, the submarine was suddenly replaced by the helicopter-carrying destroyer Izumo, the largest ship in the Maritime Self-Defense Force, and this time it was Izumo again.

So I asked which of the two Self-Defense Forces would be responsible for the maintenance of the F-35B fighter aircraft, which I had been a little curious about. The Air Self-Defense Force would be assigned to the base, and of course, the Air Self-Defense Force would conduct the training of the pilots.

However, when training on the Izumo, which is effectively an aircraft carrier, we did not know which of the two was responsible for maintenance.

When we asked a member of the team, he said, "It has not been decided yet," but we would like to keep an eye on how it will be decided.

We have compiled a video of the exchange, etc., for those who are interested.

Yokohama Cruise on the Marine Rouge [Impression]

DSC03967-1.jpg

We boarded the Marine Rouge, a popular sightseeing cruise in Yokohama.

It was an afternoon course called afternoon tea, so we only had cake and tea.

I ate the cake before the ship sailed, so I spent the rest of the time outside, including on the Sky Deck on the rooftop.

On the day of the cruise, we were suddenly told that we could not go under the Bay Bridge because of other ships, but the weather was fine and we enjoyed the 60-minute cruise.

If you come to Yokohama for sightseeing, I would recommend that you do not have dinner on the cruise, unless you are going on a date.

Destroyer Izumo to aircraft carrier Izumo [Impression]

DSC04055-1.JPG

I was able to board the Izumo, one of the largest helicopter-carrying destroyers of the Maritime Self-Defense Force. It was open to the public on short notice at the Yokosuka District General Headquarters in place of a submarine.

I was very excited because I had wanted to go on board for a long time.

I could not get on the deck, but I could enter the very spacious hangar.

I heard that it can hold 50 trucks.

Renovation work to turn it into an aircraft carrier will begin at the end of FY2024, and it is scheduled to be equipped with F35-B fighter jets used by the U.S. military in FY2027.

It is said that this is the Maritime Self-Defense Force's long-cherished wish to convert the ship into an aircraft carrier.

The Maritime Self-Defense Force test ship ASUKA successfully conducted the world's first offshore railgun firing test! [Impression]

Snapshot11.jpg

The successful offshore launch experiment of a railgun made the news last October. The ship that conducted the experiment was the test ship ASUKA.

It is the only ship of its kind in Japan and is responsible for testing various equipment and facilities of the Maritime Self-Defense Force.

It is said that a ship dedicated to testing is rare in the world.

The rail gun is an electromagnetic gun, which is a new weapon that does not use gunpowder but generates magnetic force based on electricity to send bullets flying.

It is expected to be able to respond to hypersonic guided missiles because it can reach a speed of Mach 5 or faster.

It has not yet been put to practical use, but the United States, which has been researching it for 10 years, has already given up on its development.

Mitsuo Aida Museum of Art closes. [Impression]

IMG_9759.jpeg

IMG_9758.jpeg

Upon hearing the news that the museum will be closing next week on January 28, I rushed to visit.

I had visited the museum once a long time ago, but I did not know that Mitsuo Aida was influenced by the teachings of Zen master Dogen, founder of the Soto sect of Zen Buddhism.

I also did not know that he had written beautiful, unbroken calligraphy in his youth, which had won many prizes at calligraphy exhibitions.

I also learned for the first time that he had developed that unique typeface through a process of trial and error.

This time, I bought a postcard with the character "here and now" written on it.

I saw the submarine Uzushio at an open house of the Yokosuka Regional Superintendent General's Office. It is rare to see a submarine open to the public, but people like me, who frequently visit the submarine, have trouble taking pictures and videos because the pictures are always the same.

This time, however, the periscope and rudder were on display for us to see.

I was a little impressed, especially because it was the first time I actually saw the periscope move.
If you look closely, you can see that it has a tiger pattern on it, which was cute.

What is a rescue ship that helps submarines? [Impression]

samune-11.jpg

Submarines are known as the "ninjas of the seas" and the "stealth of the seas."

Since they do not know where they are, they are considered to be the most powerful weapons, and recently countries have been working hard to secure them.

When I heard that there is a ship that rescues these submarines, I wondered, "What? I wondered, "What? It was not a submarine, but a surface ship.

I thought, "If a submarine, which acts in such a way that even its allies, let alone its enemies, do not know where it is, and if a surface ship goes to it when it calls for help, isn't it a lost cause? I thought.

But in case the submarine got stuck and also could not float up, the crew could not be saved.

That is why submarine rescue ships are prepared for emergencies.
in case of an emergency.

And because of this rescue ship, submariners can board the submarine with peace of mind.

The submarine rescue ship Chiyoda shown in the photo is one of the two ships owned by the Maritime Self-Defense Force and deployed in Yokosuka.

Junichi Nakahara Exhibition in its 111th year [Impression]

IMG_9719.jpeg

IMG_9718.jpeg

The exhibition was held at the museum in Sogo, a department store located at the east exit of Yokohama Station.

I had an image of Nakahara as an illustrator who gained support from young women during the prewar and postwar periods.

However, the exhibition made it clear to me that this understanding was not sufficient.

Of course, he had an overwhelming influence on young women, but I realized that he was active not only in illustration but also in fashion, interior design, magazine editing, and many other fields.

And her designs and way of thinking were new to me in a roundabout way.

In that sense, 111 years is an interesting project.

Incidentally, I was also worried that his "sensitivity and passion for girls and women" might have been quite rare in Japan at that time.

But perhaps that is how it was with the top runners of the times.

[Impression]

DSC03756-2.jpg

When I learned that the U.S. Navy's nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan would be returning to her home country for repairs this spring, I wanted to take a look at it and joined the YOKOSUKA Military Port Tour.

I was surprised to hear the guide's explanation. There are 6,000 people on board, and the ship has a hospital, a dental clinic,
post office, and a Starbucks coffee shop.

Furthermore, when a Japanese muscle celebrity visited the ship's gym, he found that there are six gyms on board.

Since there are so many gyms and Starbucks, there must be other facilities necessary for daily life.

I don't know if it is because it is the only U.S. Navy carrier deployed in another country, or if U.S. carriers are like that, but it looks like a city.

New Year's Day, not just a submarine [Impression]

DSC03721-12.jpg

Thank you for your patience with my poor blog during the last year.
I look forward to working with you again in the New Year.

Yesterday, a major earthquake hit the Noto Peninsula and a tsunami swept through the area, causing a lot of damage. I am sure that it must have been a very painful and sad New Year's Day for those who were affected by the disaster and their families.

Also today, there was a startling accident, such as the JAL plane that burst into flames.

It has been an unpredictable New Year's Day.

So, it is really not about submarines, but it is also my aspiration for this year, so please forgive me.

This year, there will be open-house exhibitions of submarines and other vessels at Yokosuka Air Base about twice a month, so I expect that my posts will be mainly related to those exhibitions.

Submarines are the stealth of the sea, and everything on board and even their actions are secret.

In addition, Yokosuka and Kure in Hiroshima are the only home ports for submarines in Japan, so I will try my best to go to Yokosuka and interview the crew as much as I can.

However, I am not sure what is really going to happen in the days ahead, so I intend to be flexible and flexible in my responses. Please forgive me.

The life of a submarine fleet member is extremely hard! [Impression]

IMG_E9523-2.jpg

IMG_E9522-2.jpg
During the Yokosuka Military Port Tour, information on various naval vessels is presented based on the wealth of knowledge of the guides, but one topic that is unique to Yokosuka is submarines.

There are five Maritime Self-Defense Force bases in Japan, but only Kure in Hiroshima Prefecture and Yokosuka have submarines.

Therefore, you can see submarines anchored in the harbor only in limited places.

And what was introduced on this cruise to military ports was the lifestyle of submarine fleet members.

The key word is "sound. Submariners are called the ninjas of the sea or the stealth of the sea, and they act in such a way that their presence is not known by their allies as well as their enemies.

Therefore, they need to live their lives in such a way that they make no sound in everything they do.

The guide introduced that even the sound of toilet paper rattling around is restricted, and that they use coreless toilet paper.

I understood that this is a very hard job, with strict restrictions on not being able to breathe outside air and not being allowed to make any noise.

YOKOSUKA Military Port Cruise [Impression]

SnapShot(161)-2.jpg

This cruise is gradually becoming popular as a way to see both the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force and U.S. Navy vessels from the ship at the same time.

I joined this cruise because I wanted to see the destroyer Izumo, one of Japan's largest naval vessels, before it is refitted into the aircraft carrier Izumo.

However, I was also able to see the icebreaker Shirase, a famous Antarctic observation ship, and a U.S. destroyer.

Among them, I was quite lucky to see a rare ship, the Zeus, the only "cable laying ship" of the U.S. Navy, which had landed on the shore.

In any case, the guide's easy-to-understand explanations and guidance based on a wealth of information about the naval vessels, which change on a daily basis, were excellent, making this a cruise that I would like to return to again and again.

Symphony and Public Orchestras [Impression]

SnapShot(164)-1.jpg

I use the terms symphony orchestra and public brass band.
There are many private brass bands, but why do public institutions such as the Self-Defense Forces, fire departments, and police departments have brass bands? I have wondered a little.

The role of a brass band is to raise the morale of its members, to build bridges between the public and citizens, and to promote international goodwill.

And I also found out that brass bands of such organizations often perform outside.

I see. That's why you often see them at parades.

When you think about it, playing outside, especially while walking, you can't even see the sheet music, so you have to memorize everything.

In some cases, it seems to be greatly affected by the natural environment, such as strong winds, rain, or the hot sun.

I would like to thank all the band members who entertain us in such circumstances. We have created a short video of the JMSDF for your viewing pleasure, if you would like to watch it.

The JMSDF Yokosuka District Unit Autumn Festa is substantial! [Impression]

DSC03161-1.jpg

The Yokosuka District Unit Autumn Festa, held on October 21, was a fulfilling event for naval and Maritime Self-Defense Force enthusiasts. In addition to public displays of old and new destroyers, submarines, and guest ships, as well as hands-on voyages, there were also displays of Japan Coast Guard patrol vessels and vehicles from the Ground and Air Self-Defense Force.
In addition, there was a parade by the music bands of the U.S. Navy's Seventh Fleet and the Maritime Self-Defense Force's Yokosuka.

Since it is basically a base, there was no full restaurant or cafeteria, but there was a concession stand that sold food, but the line was long, so I had to be patient and go outside for dinner.

Still, I was very happy to witness such unexpected ceremonies as the inauguration of the submarine's captain for a day.

The name of the Japan Coast Guard patrol vessel comes from the local area. [Impression]

DSC03232-.jpg

Ships have a registry, and Japan Coast Guard vessels are always named "Tokyo.

However, the name of the ship is always named after the locality.

For example, Hokkaido is the First Regional District, while Tokyo, Chiba, and Kanagawa are the Third Regional Districts.

I learned that the names of ships are derived from the names of places within these districts.

The largest helicopter-carrying patrol vessels are named after old countries (e.g., Mizuho), or places at sea or mountains (e.g., Daisen), and the next largest patrol vessels are named after peninsulas or capes (e.g., Izu, Miura).

The next largest patrol vessels are named after peninsulas and capes (e.g. Izu, Miura).

However, for smaller vessels, snow, fog, waves, moon, clouds, wind and flowers are also used.

However, depending on the circumstances, they are said to be reassigned just like personnel transfers, and as a rule, the ship's name changes when it crosses the jurisdictional boundary.

In any case, since there are so many ships, such measures are taken to make them easy to understand for the locals and to make them feel attached to them.

Incidentally, the patrol vessel Ashitaka in the photo belongs to the 3rd Regional District, which also has jurisdiction over Shizuoka, and is thought to be named after Mount Ashitaka, which is located south of Mount Fuji.

Patrol Vessel Ashitaka equipped with a machine gun [Impression]

DSC03224-1.jpg
Not large for a patrol vessel, the Ashitaka has a speed of 35 knots, or 65 kilometers per hour.

It is said that this is to prevent illegal fishing boats and suspicious ships from escaping in case of their presence.

And it has a 20mm machine gun, which can be fired remotely from the bridge where the wheelhouse is located.

It is clear that the police are responsible for the fire brigade, emergency services, and other tasks on land, while the police are responsible for the fire brigade and emergency services at sea.

In addition, they are also involved in surveying and research, so they are not only responsible for a wide area, but also have a wide range of responsibilities, which is truly amazing.

Tokyo Fire Department Fireboat Miyakodori [Impression]

DSC03656-1.jpg

The fireboat Miyakodori was open to the public at the Fire and Disaster Prevention Festa 2023 held by the Tokyo Fire Department's Rinko Fire Station.

It was the first time for me to board a fireboat, but I found it to be full of attractions, including a room that serves as an operation headquarters and a bed for rescuers.

Among them, I was interested in the equipment used for rescues. I could not understand why they were hung on the wall and numbered one by one.

When I asked a member of the team about it, he told me that because they work in three shifts, three people use them all together.

In other words, there are three captains, three chief engineers, three deck officers, and of course, three members of the crew below them.

This is a natural thing in the nature of firefighting.

After the festa was over, they showed us a water discharge performance with the Rainbow Bridge in the background, which was a wonderful sight to behold.

However, that was only possible because there was no fire that would require the dispatch of a fireboat.

In other words, if there is a call for dispatch, they must be dispatched immediately, even during the event.

Coastal and vessel fires are not frequent, but it is still going to be very stressful to work a job where you never know when you will be dispatched and when it will be over.

The rescue training of the Tokyo Fire Department Water Rescue Team is a highlight! [Impression]

DSC03666-1.jpg

When I visited an event called Fire and Disaster Prevention Festa 2023 by the Rinko Fire Department of the Tokyo Fire Department, I was able to watch a water rescue team in action.

I was quite shocked, as I had no idea what a water rescue team was, what kind of people could be assigned to this job, or how they actually perform rescues.

I was quite shocked, because it was a very hard job.

After going through examinations and training, I became a member of the water rescue team for the first time,
I found out that they also have to go through grueling training all the time.

Furthermore, the Tokyo Fire Department is responsible for about 250 water accidents a year, and the Rinko Fire Department is responsible for half of them.

I was also amazed to learn that they rescue drowning people in zero visibility, using only one rope to connect with their friends.

I was reminded once again that our safety and security are ensured by people with such pride and a sense of mission.

Recently, I see a lot of things related to ships that I had never seen before [Impression]

SnapShot(148)-1.jpg

Recently, I have been visiting the Maritime Self-Defense Force and Japan Coast Guard ships when they open their ships to the public.

There are a few such things that I had not seen very often before.

The first of these is something called a boat fender or fender.
These are cushioning materials that prevent damage to the hull of a boat when it berths at the wharf.

It's something so obvious when you think about it, but it's actually a fresh surprise to me because I hadn't really been aware of it before and my image of it only brought to mind a picture of a number of old tires.

When you touch it, you realize that even though it is a cushioning material, it is quite hard.

It is a cushion for a large ship, so it is natural to say.

And there is one more thing that you often see. It is a rope wound round and round.

At first glance, it looks like a beehive. I still don't know what it is used for or what it is called.

I would like to ask a sailor about it next time when the ship is open to the public.

Is the destroyer Yugiri extending its retirement age? [Impression]

DSC03241-1.JPG

I have seen the destroyer Yugiri and the destroyer Amagiri.

These are both the third and fourth ships of the "Asagiri" type destroyers and have already been in service for 34 years.

That is already the oldest active destroyer in service, they say.

From the looks of it, the part with the wheelhouse in the middle, called the bridge is rather cluttered with steel towers standing on it.

But I think this feeling is the most typical of the Self-Defense Forces' destroyers.

In fact, the overall exterior design of modern destroyers is flimsy to avoid detection by enemy radar.

In other words, there are more flat areas, and although it is sleeker, I feel that it has lost its old-fashioned battleship-like appearance.

Even though this Yugiri is still active and the oldest, she has undergone what is called a naval ship extension project, so she will be at the forefront for a while longer.

It is truly a retirement extension. I hope she will continue to do her best for as long as possible.

When I recently visited an open ship of the Japan Coast Guard patrol vessel Sagami, the last thing I saw was a recruitment pamphlet for the Japan Coast Guard Academy.

The pamphlet explained the appeal of the school in a cartoon format to reach the minds of high school students and others.

The importance of recruiting young people is the same in the JCG, and in other organizations as well.
And I feel that many companies and organizations in the industries around me, for example, are unable to hire young people.

To begin with, the number of young people is decreasing in terms of the demographic composition, so it is natural.

This is especially true for jobs in the Japan Coast Guard, Maritime Self-Defense Force, and other fields that require strong mental and physical strength.

On the other hand, in industries that do not require such physical strength, it may be necessary to change the conventional way of thinking.

I am beginning to think that there may not be a shortage of human resources if we can discard our preconceptions about age, gender, educational background, nationality, and so on.

How to store a helicopter on a patrol boat [Impression]

When I went to an open ship of the helicopter-equipped Japan Coast Guard patrol vessel Sagami, I saw a nice helicopter parked on the deck.

As I expected, it was a rare sight, so it attracted a lot of attention from visitors. Then, a simple question arose.

Even if you can go down to the deck because you are a good pilot of the JCG, how can you enter the hangar?

The ship is equipped with tires, so if all the crew members pushed the helicopter, would it move? And...

When I asked him about it, he told me that there is a special attachment and that they use it to pull it with a wire.

As expected, it seems that even the strongest members of the Japan Coast Guard could not move the boat by human power alone.

Inauguration Ceremony of Submarine Narushio as Captain for a Day [Impression]

DSC03160-1.jpg

FRESH CAMPUS CONTEST2022

As before, I was able to see the submarine Narushio up close during the Yokosuka District Autumn Festa of the Maritime Self-Defense Force.

I had intended to get on the back of the submarine, but the public viewing was interrupted while I was visiting other naval vessels.

I was told that a one-day captain's inauguration ceremony would be held.

They were not informed in advance which submarine would be open to the public, so naturally there was no advance notice of the one-day captain's inauguration ceremony.

Even if I boarded the submarine, I could not see the inside of the submarine, so I gave up on that and observed the one-day captain's inauguration ceremony.

Some of the visitors around me said, "Captain Kaieda is the captain for a day! and others were expecting Mr. Takao Osawa, who starred in "The Silent Fleet," to be there, but he was not.

It was Ms. Reiko Kosugi, the grand prix winner of FRESH CAMPUS CONTEST 2022.

She is a current female college student talent from Aoyama Gakuin University.
The members of the team stood erect and saluted in front of the very pretty captain for a day, but I think their hearts were very much in turmoil.

I felt that perhaps the "captain for a day" system is for the benefit of the young members.

The state-of-the-art destroyers are straight and flattened! [Impression]

DSC03121-1.jpg

The image of JMSDF vessels has changed. I had always thought that they were curvy and had many cannons and antennas on deck, as an extension of the image of the old battleship 00.

However, when I went to the Yokosuka District Autumn Festa of the Maritime Self-Defense Force and actually saw the state-of-the-art destroyer Kuma, I had to abandon this image. This straight, nodding exterior is said to enhance stealth.

In other words, it is less likely to be caught on the enemy's radar. And, in previous destroyers, torpedo launchers were fired from the deck, but this one is not found on the deck.

And they are also making progress in reducing the number of crew members. In fact, a ship of this size would have a capacity of about 220 people, but this one has a whopping 90.

Microwave ovens, the Internet, and GPS all come from military technology, but since the state-of-the-art destroyers seem to use the latest technology, it was forbidden to take pictures inside. That can't be helped.

The effect of the warning signs? [Impression]

IMG_9604.jpeg

Recently, I have been visiting southern islands, including Okinawa, from the end of October to November.

This year, for the first time in quite a while, I am on Yoron island.

The maximum temperature is around 26 degrees Celsius, and you can spend all day long wearing only short sleeves. It is a little cold, but I can manage to get into the sea and the pool.

In October, there is a possibility of typhoons, but as long as that is not the case, I think it is a good season for travel.

The flight from Naha takes about 40 minutes by propeller plane. Yoron Airport is small, but it makes you feel like a tourist.

And when I went to a supermarket in the downtown area of the island to buy beer and other things, I found an interesting note...

In fact, I read an article that said that the presence of a "warning sign" during the flight means that there is such a reality.

In other words, if there is a sign that says, "Don't throw garbage," there will be people who throw garbage on the street.

If it says "Beware of molesters," it means that there have been cases of molestation in the past.

The warning is very witty and amusing, but am I the only one who worried that while reading it, I might be distracted and make it dirtier?

The Kawasaki Minato Festival [Impression]

DJI_20231007103002_0006_D-1.jpg

The Kawasaki Minato Festival is being held for the 50th time, and yet I didn't even know it existed.

This may be because I myself had a strong image of "Yokohama as a port town," and Kawasaki was imprinted as an "industrial area.

But, of course, there is also the Port of Kawasaki.
Is it still possible for the city to provide free buses from Kawasaki Station to piston transport participants because the city is fully implementing the program?

My purpose was to see the JMSDF and Japan Coast Guard ships, but the Kawasaki City Fire Department also did all they could to make the event more exciting, with helicopters, ladder trucks, fire boats, etc.

In addition, there were booths by various businesses, from musical groups and stage performances, to booths with creatures for children, to linear motor cars.

Naturally, there was a full lineup of food and beverage stalls, including alcoholic beverages, making it a festival that one could spend all day at and never get tired of.

Next year, I am thinking of checking the event flyer earlier and entering a cruise at the Port of Kawasaki.
