最近よく見る、見たことがなかった船に関するもの Recently, I see a lot of things related to ships that I had never seen before

最近、海上自営隊や海上保安庁の艦船の一般公開があると、足を運ぶようになっています。

そんな中で、それまであまり見たことがなかったものが、いくつかあります。

その１番は、ボートフェンダー又は防舷材と呼ばれるものです。
船が岸壁に接岸する際に、船体が傷つかないようにするクッション材のことです。

そう考えると当たり前のものなんですが、これまであまり意識していなかったことと、私のイメージでは、古いタイヤをいくつも並べている絵しか浮かばなかったので、実は新鮮な驚きなのです。

触ってみると、クッション材と言えども、かなり固いことがわかります。

大きな船のクッションなので、当たり前と言えば当たり前ですが。

そして、よく目にするものがもう一つあります。それは丸く巻かれたロープです。

一見するとハチの巣のような形です。これについては、いまだに何に使われるものなのか、なんと呼ばれるものなのか、分かりません。

今度、一般公開があったら、船員さんに聞いてみたいと思います。

Recently, I have been visiting the Maritime Self-Defense Force and Japan Coast Guard ships when they open their ships to the public.

There are a few such things that I had not seen very often before.

The first of these is something called a boat fender or fender.
These are cushioning materials that prevent damage to the hull of a boat when it berths at the wharf.

It's something so obvious when you think about it, but it's actually a fresh surprise to me because I hadn't really been aware of it before and my image of it only brought to mind a picture of a number of old tires.

When you touch it, you realize that even though it is a cushioning material, it is quite hard.

It is a cushion for a large ship, so it is natural to say.

And there is one more thing that you often see. It is a rope wound round and round.

At first glance, it looks like a beehive. I still don't know what it is used for or what it is called.

I would like to ask a sailor about it next time when the ship is open to the public.
