「峠」司馬遼太郎 "Toge" Ryotaro Shiba [Impression]
以前、「炎の陽明学 山田方谷伝」を読んだ際、山田方谷を師として仰ぐ河井継之助が気になっていた。
その理由は、官軍側につかずに敗れた敗将なのに、「人間の芸術品」とまで言われる河井継之助がどのような人物だったかを、より知りたかったからだ。
その芸術品という表現は、まさに、江戸300年の歴史の中で形付けられた武士のあり方に関係するのだろう。
著者自身があとがきでも触れているが、「人はどう行動すれば美しいか、ということを考えるのが江戸の武士道倫理であろう。」という。
そのとおり、生き様の美しさ、筋を通す生き方などは、全編を通して、当時の雰囲気を含めてよく伝わってきた。
とても残念だが、このような素晴らしい武士であったにも関わらず、その美しさを求めたばかりに、結果的に戦に敗れ、自らもに死に至り、藩もなくしてしまったことだ。
継之助本人は、封建制度が瓦解することも、その後は外国との貿易も含めて、商売が大事なことも、全てわかっていたのに、そこが残念でならない。
実は、最後の方の北越戦争の記述は読んでいてとても苦しく感じた。
実際には継之助の墓碑が出来ても、藩民が鞭を打ったりして、墓碑を壊してしまった事実もあるようだ。
裏もあれば表もあるのは、現実の人間社会だから仕方ない。増してや、敗戦の将なら尚更だ。
しかし、これだけの才覚があったなら、歴史に"if"はないが、生き残って明治の時代にも、さぞかし活躍しただろうにと思う。
3分冊の長編だが、一気に読み通してしまうほど、のめり込んだ。
Previously, when I read "Yangmingism of Fire Yamada Hokokuden", I was interested in Kawai Tsugunosuke, who looked up to Yamada Hokoku as a teacher.

It is a pity that Tsunenosuke himself knew that the feudal system would collapse and that business was important, including trade with foreign countries.
In fact, he read the last description of the Battle of Hokuetsu and found it very painful.
In fact, even if the tombstone of Tsunenosuke was built, there seems to be a fact that the clan people whipped and destroyed the tombstone.
There is no choice but to have both the back and the front because it is a real human society. Even more so if you are a defeated general.
