「教科書に書けない『世界史』」金森誠也 "World history that cannot be written in textbooks" Shigenari Kanamori

この本を選んだのは、「西洋の意外な風俗から秘密の趣味まで」というサブタイトルに惹かれたからだ。

著者はいくつかの大学教授を歴任されたドイツ文学の先生。

世界史が苦手な人に、当時の政治、経済などを知ってもらうのではなく、風俗などの文化を雑学的に知ってもらうために書かれたそうだ。

そのため、時系列でも国別でもなく、次のような項目ごとに章立てされている。

例えば、「性愛・結婚」「しきたり・風俗」「料理・食物」「病気・医療」「浴場・トイレ・衛生」という感じだ。

つまり、世界史というより、どうでもいい小ネタを集めている。
そうした意味で、「よく調べ上げているなぁ〜」というのが第一感想だった。

そして、第二の感想としては、「仮にタイムスリップしても、住みたくない」ということ。

特に、花の都パリなどと言われるが、街中を歩く時に、アパートメントから道に糞尿が捨てられるそうで、通行人は頭からそれをかぶることもあったらしい。

そのことは、聞いたことがあったがやはり嫌だ。また、皆、風呂に入らずに体臭がきつかったという。香水が開発されたのもそのためなのだろう。

貧乏で質素だが、清潔好きな日本人にとっては、考えられない。

いずれにしても、確かに小ネタを紹介している教科書はないだろう。
でも、教科書にトピックスや閑話休題として、こんな小ネタが書かれていば、世界史を好きになる学生が増えたのではないかと私は思った。

今後、特にヨーロッパの歴史に関する本を読んだり、映画や音楽を鑑賞する際には、これらの内容を踏まえることができることがこの本を読んだメリットだと思う。

ということで、体系的に世界史を勉強したい人にはお薦めしないが、飲み会での小ネタを探す人にはちょうど良い本だと勧めたい。

I chose this book because I was attracted to the subtitle "From the surprising Western customs to the secret hobbies."

The author is a German literature teacher who has been a professor at several universities.

It is said that it was written to let people who are not good at world history know the politics, economy, etc. at that time, but to get to know the culture such as customs in a trivia manner.

Therefore, it is not chronologically or country-specific, but is organized by the following items.

For example, "sexual love / marriage", "customs", "cooking / food", "illness / medical care", "bathhouse / toilet / hygiene".

In other words, rather than world history, we are collecting small stories that don't matter.
In that sense, my first impression was, "I've been researching it well."

And the second impression is, "I don't want to live even if I slip back in time."

In particular, it is said to be the city of flowers, such as Paris, but when walking around the city, it seems that manure is dumped on the road from the apartment, and passersby sometimes wear it from their heads.

I've heard that, but I don't like it. Also, everyone said that they had a strong body odor without taking a bath. That is probably why the perfume was developed.

Poor and spartan, but unthinkable for Japanese people who like cleanliness.

In any case, there is certainly no textbook that introduces small stories.
However, I thought that if such a small story was written in the textbook as a topic or a quiet talk, the number of students who would like world history would increase.

In the future, I think it is a merit of reading this book that I can keep these contents in mind, especially when reading books on European history, watching movies and music.

So, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who wants to study world history systematically, but I would recommend it to anyone looking for a small story at a drinking party.
