「メメント・モリと写真」東京都写真美術館 "Memento Mori and Photography" Tokyo Photographic Art Museum

メメント・モリとは、ラテン語で「死を想え」という意味。
そのため、副題は「死は何を照らし出すのか」。

中世で流行したペスト菌は致死率が約半数であったらしい。つまり、罹患すると2人に1人は亡くなったという。

さらに、戦争や飢餓など、死と直面することが多かったため、誰もが死すべき運命だという自覚することで、逆に生きることへの積極的な意味を見出そうとしたとのこと。

そして、今現在も、COVID19パンデミック、ロシアによるウクライナ侵攻。地球温暖化による気候変動。そのためによる各種の災害や食糧危機などもある。

そんなタイミングを考えた写真展は時宜を得ていると言えると感じた。

展示されている写真も、ロバート・キャパや澤田教一の戦場の写真から飢餓などに関係する作品が多かった。

また、孤独とユーモアというテーマの写真の中には、荒木経惟作品や古き良きアメリカの日常風景などの作品もあった。

そして、個人的には最もインパクトを受けたのは、藤原新也のガンジス川のほとりの一連の作品だった。

まさに、彼の「メメント・モリ」という作品シリーズからの抜粋である。

この展示会では写真撮影が禁止されていたので、残念ながらご紹介出来ないが、なかなか考えさせられる素晴らしい企画であった。

Memento Mori means "remember death" in Latin.
Therefore, the subtitle is "What does death illuminate?"

The plague that was prevalent in the Middle Ages seems to have had a fatality rate of about half. In other words, 1 in 2 people who get it die.

Furthermore, because you often faced death such as war and starvation, you tried to find a positive meaning in living by realizing that everyone is destined to die.

And even now, the COVID19 pandemic, Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Climate change due to global warming. As a result, there are various disasters and food crises.

I felt that a photo exhibition with such timing in mind could be said to be well-timed.

Many of the photographs on display were related to starvation, from the battlefield photographs of Robert Capa and Kyoichi Sawada.

Among the photographs on the theme of loneliness and humor, there were works by Nobuyoshi Araki and scenes of everyday life in the good old days of America.

The most impactful work for me personally was Shinya Fujiwara's series of works on the banks of the Ganges River.

It is just an excerpt from his series of works called "Memento Mori".

Photography was prohibited at this exhibition, so unfortunately I can't introduce it, but it was a wonderful project that made me think.
