「コンテナ物語」マルク・レビンソン "THE BOX" Marc Levinson

今では当たり前のコンテナだが、当時は、まさに、この言葉のとおりだったようだ。

ある日本の大企業の社長がこの本を読んで感銘を受けたという雑誌の記事を読み、私は興味を持った。

著者は、アメリカの経済誌の編集者である。そして、これまで誰もコンテナについて体系的な本を書いていないことを知り、自ら書き始めたという。

そして、サブタイタイトルのとおり、「世界を変えたのは『箱』の発明だった。」ということを様々な角度から調査し言及している。

今や物流手段として、世界的に当たり前になっているコンテナだが、普及に至るまでの紆余曲折、失敗と成功、判断ミスや埠頭や地域、国の浮き沈みなどは、読んでいてとても引き込まれた。

全体は15章で構成されている。荷物を箱に入れて運ぶという発想の主であるマルコム・マクリーンを中心に様々な切り口で物語は展開する。

例えば、埠頭、トラック野郎、ベトナム戦争、荷主など。
これらのテーマ毎に、大きな障壁があったり、紆余曲折がある。

今では40フィートのコンテナが流通しているが、当初は各社様々な規格のものを使っていたようで、その辺りの攻防はとても興味深い。

さらに、マクリーンがコンテナを利用し始めた経緯から、荷役作業員の労働組合とのやりとりも、参考になる。

その他、州と市のせめぎ合いやライバル会社との競争など、本当に隙がないほど様々な視点、角度からコンテナをテーマに当時の軋轢、戦いなどが描かれている。

そうした意味では、私の中では画期的な本である。ただ、小説ではないので、かなり詳細な記載もあり、少し辟易とする点も否めない。

考えようによっては、実はコンテナだけでなく、いろいろなビジネスの場面に置き換えて考えていける。そう考えると、とても参考になる経済専門書だとも言える。

大きな社会の潮流を鳥瞰しながら仕事をするビジネスマンには、お勧め出来る本だ。
