個人から貰った東京国立近代美術館 The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo given by a private individual.

割と話題の展覧会が開催されると、よくわからなくても美術館に足を運ぶ質の私。

実は、先日報告したガウディとサグラダ・ファミリア展の会場である東京国立近代美術館は初めてでした。

日本で最初の国立美術館なのに、行ったことがなかったことに自分でも驚きました。

立地は、皇居外苑の北の丸公園という、まさに東京の中心部。

1969年の竣工ですが、建築家谷口吉郎氏の設計は、古さを感じさせないモダンなデザイン。太い列柱と凸凹の梁が特徴的でした。

そして、何より驚いたのは、国立なのに、国が造ったものではなく、民間の個人が建設して寄付したとのこと。

それは、㈱ブリジストンの創業者である石橋正二郎氏。

以前はブリジストン美術館、現在はアーティゾン美術館となっていますが、美術に造詣が深く、思い入れもあったのだと思います。

今では絶対にあり得ないような話ですが、最初の国立美術館にはそんなエピソードがあったことを知り、何となく得した気分になりました。

Whenever a rather hot exhibition is held, I have the quality of visiting the museum even if I don't know much about it.

In fact, this was my first visit to the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, the venue for the Gaudi and Sagrada Familia exhibition I reported on the other day.

I was surprised to find out that I had never been to this museum, even though it was the first national art museum in Japan.

The location, Kitanomaru Park in the outer gardens of the Imperial Palace, is right in the heart of Tokyo.

Although the building was completed in 1969, architect Yoshiro Taniguchi's design is modern without being old-fashioned. The thick colonnades and convex and concave beams were distinctive features of the building.

What was most surprising was that although it is a national building, it was not built by the government, but was constructed and donated by a private individual.

It was Shojiro Ishibashi, founder of Bridgestone Corporation.

Formerly the Bridgestone Museum of Art and now the Artizon Museum of Art, I think he had a deep knowledge of art and a feeling for it.

It is something that would never happen today, but I felt somewhat privileged to know that the first national museum of art had such an episode.
