世界最北端の島発見？ Discover the northernmost island in the world? [essay]
「デンマーク領グリーンランドの北方で、世界最北端の陸地と思われる島を同国の研究チームが発見した。」との報道があった。面積は約1800m2で海抜は3〜4mしかないらしい。
このニュースにかなり驚いた。
というのも、今の時代に新たに島が発見されるのか？という極めて素朴な発想からだ。
勿論、日本でも海底火山の爆発で新たに島が出来ることはあり、最近でも「福徳岡ノ場で新しい島が出現 35年ぶり」というニュースを見た。
しかし、これは火山の爆発があったからだ。
グリーンランドの北で、まさに北極海なので、これまで発見されなかったのだろうか？
しかし、人工衛星が飛び回る現在、しかも有人の国際宇宙ステーションもあるのに、気づかないのだろうか？
いずれにしても、主に砂利でできているため、「強力な嵐が直撃すれば消滅しかねない」らしいので、コペンハーゲン大学の発表をチェックしてみたくなった。(写真はイメージ画像:pixabay)
