「マキアヴェッリ語録」塩野七生 "Machiavelli Glossary" Nanami Shiono [Impression]
これは、ニコロ・マキアヴェッリの言葉の抜粋という珍しい形式の本である。
何故、完訳でも、要約でも、解説でもない本を書いたのか。その理由を著者は「読者に」と題して、最初に説明している。
時代背景やヨーロッパで教育を受けていない日本人にとっては、下手に解説などするより、単純に彼の言葉を「抜粋」にした方が良いと判断したことは、この解説でよく理解出来た。
さらに著者が抜粋とした理由をもう一つあげている。
それは、「500年このかたくり返されてきた、彼の思想への賛否両論の対立の歴史を調べた結果、到達した結論でもありました。」ということ。
このことについては、巻末にある唐津一氏の解説にも、次のように記載されている。
「古くからマキアヴェッリズムは、権謀術数の代名詞のように言われて、君子の近寄るものではないと扱われていた。」と。
実は、私は著者の代表作である「ローマ人の物語」を読んでいたが、現在、中断中である。
長編のため、時間のある時に一気に読み進めたいと思い、本棚にしまってあるだけだが、一定の登場人物の名前は記憶にあった。
そうしたら意味では、古代ローマのことを少しでも覚えていたことは、この本を読む上では助けになった。
さて、その上での読後の感想を言えば、とてもすんなりと頭に入ってきた。
特に、「君主論」からの抜粋については、納得する内容ばかりであった。言い換えれば、上に立つ者の当たり前のセオリー、定石、基本が確実に引用されていて、決して権謀術数という印象は持たなかった。
「なるほど、これが著者の思惑だったのか」と、最後に納得して読み終えた。

Why did you write a book that was neither a complete translation, a summary, nor a commentary? The author first explains why, entitled "To the Reader."
It was well understood from this commentary that for Japanese people who have not been educated in Europe due to the background of the times, it was decided that it would be better to simply use his words as "excerpts" rather than giving poor commentary.
I also give another reason why the author made an excerpt.
It was "a conclusion reached as a result of examining the history of the pros and cons of his ideas, which has been repeated for 500 years."
This is also described in the commentary by Mr. Hajime Karatsu at the end of the book as follows.
"From ancient times, Machiavellism was said to be synonymous with the number of tactics, and was treated as not being close to the prince."
Actually, I was reading the author's masterpiece "Stories of the Romans", but it is currently suspended.
Because it's a feature film, I wanted to read it all at once when I had time, so I just kept it on the bookshelf, but I remembered the names of certain characters.
In that sense, remembering even a little about ancient Rome helped me read this book.
Well, speaking of the impression after reading on that, it came to my mind very smoothly.
In particular, the excerpts from "The Prince" were all convincing. In other words, the theories, joseki, and basics of those who stand above were definitely quoted, and I never had the impression of the number of tactics.
