川を見る旅 A trip to see the river [エッセイ]
四万十川を見に行った。これまで、川そのものを見に行く目的の旅はなかった。
今回、何故そう思ったのか、改めて考えてみた。
理由の一つは、四万十川を妻に見せたいと思ったからだ。実は、自分自身は以前、訪れたことがあったが、その時、妻に見せたいと思ったことを思い出したのだ。
二つ目は、簡単に行けない場所なので、逆に旅の目的に成り得たことだ。今回の旅のもう一つの目的は藁焼き鰹塩タタキを食べることだったが、四万十川は、高知からも遠く、わざわざ行かないと見れない。数年前にも、高知に二人で来たが、遠いので諦めた経緯があった。
その上で、とうとう今回は、四万十川にやってきた。
ところで、何故、この川を見せたいと思ったのだろうか？
川と言っても、色々ある。ゴミで汚れた川、コンクリートで固められた川などは、とても残念な気持ちになる。一方、台風や大雨の時の暴れ川や堤防決壊などは、とても凶暴な怪獣にさえ思える。川は
とても、表情豊かなのだ。
特に、大自然に囲まれて、悠々と流れる川は、とても気持ちが落ち着く。
美空ひばりさんの歌のように、川の流れは、人生そのものなのかもしれない。だから、妻にこの川を見せようと思ったのだろうか？
I went to see Shimanto River. Until now, there was no trip to see the river itself.
This time, I thought again why I thought so.
One reason was that I wanted to show Shimanto River to my wife. In fact, I remembered that I had visited before, but then I wanted to show it to my wife.
The second is that it can be a destination for traveling because it is a place that is not easily accessible. Another purpose of this trip was to eat straw-grilled bonito salt tataki, but the Shimanto River is far from Kochi and can only be seen on purpose. A few years ago, we came to Kochi, but we gave up because we were far away.
Finally, this time, I came to Shimanto River.
By the way, why did I want to show this river?
There are various types of rivers. Rivers that are dirty with garbage and rivers that are hardened with concrete feel very disappointing. On the other hand, stormy rivers and levee breaks during typhoons and heavy rains seem to be very ferocious monsters. The river

Especially, the river that flows slowly and is surrounded by nature is very calm.
Like the song by Hibari Misora, the flow of the river may be life itself. So did I want to show this river to my wife?
