「老いてこそ遊べ」遠藤周作 "Play when you're old" by Shusaku Endo

著者はすでに故人ではある。そして、私は実際にその小説を読んだ記憶はない。ただ、コーヒーのコマーシャルに違いのわかる男、「狐狸庵先生」として、出ていたし、とてもユーモアに富むユニークなエッセイストでもあったという印象を私は持っていた。

そこで、タイトルにも興味を持ったので、読んでみることにした。そして、私はとても笑い、勇気ももらえた。

この本は、もともと著者が文藝春秋など他の文学誌によせたエッセイをテーマ毎に再収録したもの。

そのため、少し時間軸が違うが、一貫しているのは、老人だからと言って躊躇せずに、好きなように遊ぼうということだ。

構成は次の5章である。
①人生、楽しむこと
②おかしな友人
③死ぬの生きるの騒いでみも・・・
④老いる時は老いるがよし
⑤人生の夕映え穏やかに

とにかく多趣味な人で、芝居やコーラスをやったり、社交ダンスにも挑戦している。
勿論、碁を打ったり、盆栽いじりなど、老人らしい一面もあるが、若い人を連れて街歩きなどもする。

全体的に一昔前の内容にはなっており、50歳後半から老人という年齢のイメージが今とは合わない感じもした。

ただ、そんなことを気にせずに著者は遊び回っていたことについて、とても私は感心した。

また、最後の章では「人生の夕映え」という言葉を使っており、その辺りは流石に作家だけあって、哀愁を帯びている。

著者の没後、随分経ってからの再編集による発行となった理由がよくわからないが、いつ死ぬかわからないと思えば、やりたいことをやった方がいいという思いは十分に伝わってくる本であった。

The title intrigued me, so I decided to read it. And it made me laugh a lot and gave me courage.

This book is a re-recording of essays originally written by the author for other literary magazines such as Bungeishunju.

Therefore, the time axis is slightly different, but what is consistent is that you should not hesitate to play as you like because you are an old man.

It consists of the following five chapters.
① Enjoy life
② funny friend
③ Even if you make a fuss about dying or living...
④ When you get old, it's okay to grow old
⑤ Calmly sunset of life

Anyway, he was a person with many hobbies, doing plays and choruses, and even trying ballroom dancing.
Of course, he had an old-fashioned side to him, such as playing go and tinkering with bonsai trees, but he also took young people on walks around town.

Overall, the content is from a long time ago, and I felt that the image of an old man from the late 50s does not match the current image.

However, I was very impressed that the author was playing around without worrying about such things.

Also, in the final chapter, he uses the phrase ``Jinsei no Yubae'', which, as one would expect from a writer, is tinged with melancholy.

I don't really understand why it was re-edited and published after a long time after the author's death, but it is a book that fully conveys the thought that if you don't know when you will die, you should do what you want to do.
