フィンランドを代表する監督の作品。首都ヘルシンキを舞台にしている。主役の年老いた美術商は、絵を見る目は持っているが、商売はうまく行っておらず厳しい。

もう店を止めようかと考えている中で、オークションに出される素晴らしい作品に気付く。そして、無理をして落札する。

その老美術商に疎遠だった娘や盗難などをして素行が少し良くない孫、友人などが絡んでいく。

老人が主役だけあって、なんとも言えない落ち着いた雰囲気がある。
その一方で、オークションなどの場面はかなり緊張感がある。

長年の経験で培った見識で、掘り出し物を競り落とすものの、商売としては失敗し、店をたたむことになる。

それでも、結果的には、娘や孫に対して、一矢報いることになる。美術というより、家族の物語と考えるべき映画だ。
