「老人と海」アーネスト・ヘミングウェイ "The Old Man and the Sea" Ernest Hemingway

著者がノーベル文学賞を受賞した際、一番影響した本だと言われている名作。
これまで何人もの翻訳者が訳しているが、福田恆存氏のものを読んだ。

表現の古さは否めないが、ありありと目の前に情景が浮かび上がってくる。

特に後半のカジキマグロや鮫との格闘シーンは、描写がリアルで一気に引き込まれてしまった。

そんな中で、とても気になったセリフがあった。

『「けれど、人間は負けるように造られてはいないんだ」とかれは声に出していった、「そりゃ、人間は殺されるかもしれない、けれど負けはしないんだぞ」』

私が感じたこの小説のすべてを表していると言葉だと思う。

A masterpiece that is said to have been the most influential book when the author won the Nobel Prize in Literature.
I have read the one by Tsuneari Fukuda, which has been translated by many translators so far.

The expression is undeniably old, but the scene emerges in front of me.

Especially in the latter half of the fighting scene with swordfish and sharks, the depiction was realistic and I was drawn in at once.

Meanwhile, there was a line that I was very interested in.

"But humans aren't built to lose," he said, "that's why humans may be killed, but they won't lose."

I think it's a word that describes all of this novel I've felt.
