三菱地所の会長が生涯最高の本として、紹介していた本。日本近代史に詳しくない私は、この人の名前を実は知らなかった。
海軍大将になった最後の人。社会の風潮がどうであっても、組織の中でも自分の信念を変えずに貫き通すのが、素晴らしい。
開戦賛成派が多い陸軍に、このような人が沢山いれば、太平洋戦争には突入しなかったのではないかとも思った。
ところで、この本で感心するのは、著者が細かな部分までよく調べ上げていること。
伝記の場合、良い点ばかりがクローズアップされるが、この伝記は悪い点も含めて、正直に、正確に書いている。
併せて、昭和近代史をよく知らなかった自分にとっても、太平洋戦争前後の状況が良く理解出来た。
少し前に読んだ「海賊と呼ばれた男」は出光佐三氏の半生だったが、その時期と重なっていたこともあり、大正から昭和の雰囲気を何となく掴めたという意味で、とても自分にとっても、有意義な本だった。
