初詣 The first shrine visit of the year

毎年、初詣は一月中旬以降に行くことにしている。というのは、混んでいるのがとてつもなく嫌いだからだ。
神社の方は、初詣の参拝客がこの時期でもまだ途切れないため、宮司や巫女の数は減らしても、佇まいについては、三が日と同じ状態を維持しているので、気分は正月と変わらない。
実は、この初詣を外国人に説明するのは、難しいことだ。
新年最初の参拝をすることは理解してもらえるが、毎週行くのか？あるいは毎月なのか？と聞かれてしまう。キリスト教やイスラム教などの信心深い人たちに比べて、神社やお寺に行く頻度が私は、かなり少ないからだ。
新年とは言え、たった一度のお参りで、一年分のご利益を期待するのは、かなり虫が良すぎることのようだ。
